Midwest-Canada Relations: State-by-state data snapshots on binational trade and border crossings in 2024
Since 1991, The Council of State Governments’ Midwestern Legislative Conference (MLC) has provided staff support to the binational Midwest-Canada Relations Committee. This binational group is made of legislators from 11 Midwestern states and four Canadian provinces. The province of Saskatchewan is now a full member of the MLC; Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario are affiliate members. The MLC Midwest-Canada Relations Committee has worked over the years to advocate for states and provinces in this region on various binational border and trade issues, while also serving as a forum for cross-border relationship building and information sharing.
The Midwest is home to 29 land ports of entry at the U.S.-Canada border. On binational trade, Canada accounts for a significant amount of Midwestern states’ total global exports — for example, more than two-thirds for North Dakota, and more than one-third for Michigan, Ohio and South Dakota. On behalf of its continuing support for the MLC Midwest-Canada Relations Committee, CSG Midwest collected data on state-by-state trade with Canada and border crossings. The information is from 2024.
