CSG Midwest brings region’s legislators together for workshop on AI policy
Twenty-five legislators from nine Midwestern states and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan took a deep-dive into the future of artificial intelligence at a two-day workshop that focused on the policy implications, challenges and opportunities associated with the rise in AI. The event was held May 3 and 4 in Chicago.
Leading experts in AI helped participants explore impacts in areas such as lawmaking, constituent services and state government operations, consumer protection and data security, the future of K-12 education and state workforces, and energy demand (due to the proliferation of data centers). The workshop included presentations along with a series of interactive sessions and smaller-group discussions.
The goal of the workshop was to help participants become more informed leaders on AI and to learn about the state policies that can harness its benefits while mitigating risks.
“Shaping the AI Future in Your State: A Workshop for the Midwest’s Legislators” was the result of a partnership between The Council of State Governments’ Midwestern Office and the Center for Scientific Evidence in Public Issues, or EPI Center. The center is a nonpartisan, non-advocacy program housed within the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
CSG Midwest offered the workshop as part of its support of the bipartisan Midwestern Legislative Conference.
