How are states tackling housing shortages? A new CSG Midwest report details laws and policy strategies

Across the country, state and community leaders say they need more housing.

What new policies, investments and laws are being pursued by legislatures in the Midwest to address shortages and spur more housing production?

A new report from CSG Midwest explores this question, and it finds several notable developments across the 11-state region. Among them:

• establishing new state-funded grant and revolving-loan programs, and sometimes tying this financial assistance to the development of “workforce housing” — homes affordable to workers and/or are located near planned economic development projects.
• enacting laws that aim to streamline permitting processes and incentivize regulatory reform at the local level.

The new report — “Time to Build: State Policy Trends To Address the Housing Needs of Midwest Communities and the Workforce” — was produced in support of the Midwestern Legislative Conference Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee.
