State Shipment Fees

Please note that this page compiles fees specifically on shipments of radioactive waste. It does not include permit and registration fees.

Illinois

Applies to: spent nuclear fuel, transuranic waste, high-level radioactive waste, and highway route controlled quantities of radioactive material

Shipments by truck: $2,500 per truck to be paid by the shipper

  • Surcharge on truck shipments: For routes greater than 250 miles, $25 per mile for single cask truck shipments on each truck, charged on the portion over 250 miles

Shipments by rail: $4,500 for the first cask, $3,000 for each additional cask to be paid by the shipper

Indiana

Applies to: spent nuclear fuel, high-level radioactive waste, highway route controlled quantities of radioactive material, and low-level radioactive waste

Spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste shipments by truck: $2,500 per truck to be paid by the shipper
Spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste shipments by rail:  $4,500 for the first cask, $3,000 for each additional cask to be paid by the shipper

HRCQ shipments by truck: $1,800 per truck to be paid by the shipper
HRCQ shipments by rail: $1,300 for the first cask, $125 for each additional cask to be paid by the shipper

Low-level waste: $100 for each total shipment

Iowa

Shipments by truck: $1,800 per truck cask for each shipment to be paid by the shipper

  • Surcharge on shipments by truck: $20 per mile for every mile over 250 miles traveled for single-cask truck shipments

Shipments by rail: $1,300 for the first cask, $125 for each additional cask to be paid by the shipper

Low-level waste: $175 per truck or train to be paid by the shipper

  • Surcharge: loads that are oversized and/or overweight (OSOW) must also purchase a Single Trip Permit from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)
