Shaping the AI Future in Your State: A Workshop for Midwest Legislators

This one-and-a-half day policy workshop will be held May 3-4 in downtown Chicago. The event also includes an optional evening reception on May 2 for all attendees. A travel scholarship of up to $1,000 is available for attendees.

About the workshop: A deep-dive on AI for legislators

Are you making crucial decisions about the future of artificial intelligence in your state? Do you want to become a more informed leader on AI and the state policies that can harness its benefits while mitigating its risks?

If so, we welcome you to be part of this unique opportunity for the region’s legislators.

Registration is free and now open to all lawmakers from the 11-state Midwest; however, space for the event and the number of travel scholarships are limited. Registering early is the best way to secure a spot and the travel scholarship (up to $1,000 in eligible expenses) for “Shaping the AI Future in Your State: A Workshop for the Midwest’s Legislators.”

The travel scholarship will include covering the costs of a two-night stay at the host hotel: the Warwick Allerton-Chicago Hotel. The room cost, per night, is $199, plus taxes. When you register, CSG will send you the hotel reservation link. (Attendees make their own reservations.)

This workshop is the result of a partnership between The Council of State Governments’ Midwestern Office and the Center for Scientific Evidence in Public Issues (EPI Center). The center is a nonpartisan, non-advocacy program housed within the American Association for the Advancement of Science. CSG Midwest is offering the workshop as part of its support of the bipartisan Midwestern Legislative Conference.

A preliminary workshop agenda will be available soon. This event for legislators is designed to:

  • Demystify AI with expert-led sessions on its fundamentals and practical applications in state government.
  • Explore real-world use cases and learn from legislators in neighboring states about innovative AI policies.
  • Unpack AI risks with evidence-based strategies to ensure responsible deployment.
  • Tackle pressing AI issues such as its impact on state infrastructure, energy consumption, and workforce readiness.

Why attend?

  • Engage with leading AI experts and gain insights from policymakers across the Midwest.
  • Access practical tools and resources to evaluate AI systems and their implications.
  • Discuss bipartisan solutions for integrating AI into state governance effectively and ethically.
